NSBM Undergraduates following Nutrition and Health degree engaged in an enriching visit to the factory of Maliban Biscuit Manufactories (Pvt) Limited at Ratmalana. This visit was a remarkable experience for undergraduates that shed light on the rich history and impressive manufacturing processes of this pioneering company. Maliban Biscuit Manufactories (Pvt) Limited was established in 1954 by Mr. A. G. Hinnyappuhamy and has evolved into one of Sri Lanka’s leading biscuit manufacturers. Maliban manufactures a range of crackers, cookies and wafers, sold in over 100,000 stores in Sri Lanka, and its global reach extends to more than 35 countries across 5 continents.
During the visit, the company staff extended a warm welcome to the NSBM Team, providing them with a comprehensive introduction to the company’s origins and history by the Human Resource Development Assistant, Ms. Thilini. A pivotal highlight of the visit was the enlightening factory tour with Mr. Padmananda, Manager of Manufacturing Excellence and Mr. Ujith, Assistant Production Manager, where the undergraduates had the privilege to explore their production plant firsthand, gaining valuable insights into their production process. After the visit, the Group Quality Assurance Manager, Mr. Vinoy Jayashantha, shared invaluable insights into the high-quality standards upheld by the company, which broadened understanding of the company’s unwavering dedication to maintaining high standards of consumer safety. This unique opportunity to explore the operations of a biscuit industry pioneer was made possible through the management of NSBM and the Maliban Biscuit Manufactories.
Overall, the visit was a truly fascinating experience, exceeding students’ expectations and considerably increasing the understanding of the complexities inherent in the biscuit production process. The experience at Maliban Biscuit Manufactories was not just defined by a commitment to quality but also by insightful quality assurance practices. Venturing beyond the production line, the students learned about their commitment to sustainable practices in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting their proactive efforts to build a socially and environmentally conscious business model, ultimately unveiling a visionary approach that promised a flavorful future for young aspiring scientists.
