NSBM Green University’s Faculty of Engineering proudly unveiled the NSBM Green Cart, the university’s first-ever solar-powered electric cart, marking a major step forward in sustainable innovation. This revolutionary creation is a testament to the innovation and perseverance of the engineering undergraduates at NSBM, pushing the boundaries of eco-friendly mobility.
The NSBM Green Cart is powered by an advanced charging system that features a high-efficiency 48V battery pack charged by direct solar energy, with a buck converter regulating voltage to 12V for optimal performance. Designed for endurance, the cart can travel up to 30km on a single charge, with its real-world tests demonstrating a cumulative solar-powered distance of 200km. Uniquely, it has the ability to tap into direct solar energy while on motion, reducing battery dependency and charging time.
The journey of this ambitious project began in 2022, following an industry request made at the NSBM Industrial Transformation Programme. In 2023, a group of third-year students of NSBM Faculty of Engineering took on the challenge, with successive batches refining the design. Each phase of development saw successive improvements, culminating in the fully functional prototype unveiled in 2025.
The success of the NSBM Green Cart project was made possible through the unwavering support of NSBM’s top management, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. E. A. Weerasinghe, and under the direct supervision of Dr. Chandana Perera, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
