My journey began at the National School of Business Management (NSBM) in Sri Lanka, where I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science in December 2016. NSBM provided a strong foundation that has propelled me forward in my academic and professional journeys.

My degree program at NSBM instilled in me a deep understanding of computer science principles. It wasn’t just theory; the curriculum emphasised practical skills/knowledge, preparing me for the real world. This was particularly beneficial during my final two years, where I balanced part-time studies with my work. This experience not only honed my time management skills but also exposed me to the professional world firsthand.

Following my graduation, I pursued a Master’s degree in IT (specialised in Software Design and Development) at Charles Sturt University, Australia. The knowledge gained at NSBM proved invaluable during my postgraduate studies. My NSBM background, combined with the practical experience I acquired while working during the last two years of my time at NSBM, equipped me to excel in the field of data analysis.

My career trajectory since then has been exciting. I transitioned from data analysis to data engineering, ultimately landing a hybrid consultant role. This shift reflects not only my skills but also my desire for continuous learning and growth, which is a key life lesson I took from NSBM. My recent achievements include being a finalist for the prestigious ACS (Australian Computer Society’s) Emerging Professional of the Year Award in 2022. This recognition stands as a testament to the strong foundation provided by NSBM. Additionally, in 2023, I was shortlisted for the Young Alumni of the Year Award by Charles Sturt University, my Master’s degree institution.

Beyond professional accomplishments, I’ve actively contributed to the Australian IT community. I served as the Vice Chair of the ACS Emerging Professionals Committee in 2022, recently stepping down to make way for other talented young professionals in Melbourne. Currently, I’m a member of the Melbourne ACS branch executive committee, focusing on supporting international students and graduates – a cause close to my heart.

Looking back, I credit NSBM for playing a pivotal role in shaping my success. The university fostered both academic excellence and real-world preparedness. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and experiences it provided.
